MORE You Can Do TODAY to Stop Gun Bans

We are making some great headway to the point where some news agencies are sharing actual facts, admitting that gun bans won’t reduce crime but do the opposite. And many national figures are admitting that they doubt Congress will be able to get all the new gun bans through. Nevertheless, they are still trying to get something, but will be stopped or slowed because of the flood of calls and emails by you and me.

It is not time to let up, but rather we need to step it up and overwhelm them with even more pro-gun responses. Since my last posting, there is even more we can do, and they are fairly easy and will take almost no time.

Don’t wait until our 2nd amendment rights are infringed upon even more before you do something. Don’t wait until more areas follow New York to ban every magazine you already own that holds more than 8 rounds. Nine rounds, not 30, is now considered illegal and horribly unsafe in New York. And when that doesn't stop crime, they will use some tragedy to advance their agenda to a new lower number, and on and on until they get to zero.

Take 5 minutes right now and send some emails and make some calls with these easy services below.

(1) Send 11 Emails With 1 Click

Ruger has set up a website where you can send 11 emails at once. Instantly email your local and state representatives, your Attorney General, Governor and Lieutenant Governor, as well as the President and Vice President.

Almost 700,000 people have already used this service in the last week. Use it yourself to send 11 emails right now, and continue to use this in conjunction with your weekly calls to your representatives. They have the letter already written, just type in your info and with your zip code, it'll automatically send the emails to the right people.

http://ruger.com/micros/advocacy/takeAction.html

(2) Call Your State Reps Weekly

Continue to call your state reps every week for the next 8 or so weeks. It'll take less than 1 minute per call and the message should be short and clear:
"No new gun laws.
"Gun laws have proven to fail.
"We won't stand for scapegoating.
"Remove the phony 'gun free zones' which enable killers to go unchecked.
"We are watching you carefully on this issue. Work with us or we will work to send you home."
Find your reps here: http://whoismyrepresentative.com/ and save their phone numbers in your phone as Congress 1, 2, and 3 with their names so that they are easy to call. Be friendly and to the point.

(3) Sign the Petition with Gun Appreciation Day

We had a huge turnout across the country for various events as part of the Gun Appreciation Day, but the 2nd Amendment Foundation is looking for 50 Million signatures on the petition as well. Go and sign it. http://gunappreciationday.com

(4) Sign the Petition by the Salem Radio Network.

The US Concealed Carry and Salem Radio Network have been running a petition that's been doing well. Help boost the numbers of signatures on it by signing it. http://www.supportsecondamendment.com

(5) Join the NRA.

There is no group better when it comes to access and influence with Congress and gun rights, and numbers of NRA members matter. The media has done all it can to demonize and marginalize the NRA lately, but membership is growing still.

There are an estimated 90-150 million gun owners in America. There are sadly only 4 million members of the NRA. Don't be someone that is riding for free in the wagon, help pull the wagon.

- Be a year member for only about $25 using a discount with this link.
- Be a LIFE member for only $300 (normally $1000) by calling this number 888-678-7894. This is a special number set up for listeners of Gun Talk radio, and already as of last night, 4,807 people have signed up.

(6) Spread the Word

Spread the word by passing this around to all your friends and encourage them to all do the same thing. We have the facts and the majority of people in our favor. We just need to speak up.

What Can WE Do About the Looming Gun Bans?

Current Talks of Banning Semi-Autos

Right now the Right to Bear Arms is up against the worst and most sweeping bans to date. The anti-gun groups don't want to just ban sport rifles that they have cleverly called, "Assault Rifles" to confuse the gullible, but they want to ban all semi-autos. They want to ban rifles, handguns, and shotguns, and yes even pump shotguns, and yes even Dad's and Grandpa's old wood guns made even 100 years ago passed down as heirlooms.

They may say on camera that it's only about the "dangerous" and "evil" assault rifles, and that hunters need not fear, but everyone knows that semi-autos permeate hunting, competition, self-defense, and everything else. By trying to split hunters from gun owners, they really trying to say that non-hunting gun owners are crazy and need government intervention. It's a way to get gun owners to turn against each other, when instead we should be standing with each other.

Their model legislation for the country is being pushed through Chicago and New York right now, and it bans literally everything that is semi-auto or that can hold more then 7 bullets, not 30!

There's a Rush This Month

Senator Feinstein admitted that she had been working on this legislation for over a year, and it was clear that her and President Obama were just waiting for some crisis to push it through. They were already talking about it on the news before the bodies of the poor victims were even removed from the scene. The NRA on the other hand took a full week to make even a single statement.

So why rush it? Why push it through? Because it can't pass with level-headed minds. It can't pass when facts are allowed into the conversation. And they need it to pass as soon as possible so that it's as far away as possible from the Congressional elections in two years.

They want this through in the next 4-6 weeks, and they are using the words "Registration" and "Confiscation" on almost a daily basis, and they want to stop you from selling any gun privately or passing guns on to your heirs through a will.

It doesn't matter that they got through a rifle/magazine ban that lasted an entire decade and did nothing by all accounts to stop any crime, in their world the reason it didn't work is because they didn't go far enough. Feinstein admitted that if she had got the votes, she would have used confiscation at the time.

It's Not About "Bad" Guns, but All Guns

Like you, they don't believe that one rifle is good and other rifle is bad, or that 7 bullets is just fine but 8 is somehow horrible. They don't believe that, and they also don't believe it will lower crime either if they can ban more guns. However, what it does do is gets gullible people on their side and it distracts from their real message, which is that they hate all guns. They hate all bullets. Even one bullet is too much in their minds, but they will take what they can get right now.

This new attempt is to go so much further, so that if they are forced to compromise in any way, they will still get more than they would normally get.

So What Do WE Do?

(1) Join the NRA.

Yes, there are other gun groups. Some are good at systematic lawsuits (like the 2nd Amendment Foundation), but no group is better when it comes to access and influence over Congress, and numbers of NRA members matter.

There are an estimated 90-150 million gun owners in America. There are sadly only 4 million members of the NRA. Don't be someone that is riding for free in the wagon, help pull the wagon.

You don't have to give money when they call on occasion, in fact you can have them not call you or ever send you mail. You don't even have to take the free American Rifleman magazine, but at the very least, join right now. You'd spend more on a box of bullets to shoot this week, join the NRA and get everyone else to do the same.

[save $10 with this link. It'll only be about $25 for a year.]

(2) Call each of your 3 state reps, once a week for the next 8 weeks.

The GunTalk radio show is asking all gun owners to do this and to get everyone else you know to do it too. It'll take less than 1 minute per call and the message should be short and clear.
"No new gun laws.
"Gun laws have proven to fail.
"We won't stand for scapegoating.
"Remove the phony 'gun free zones' which enable killers to go unchecked.
"We are watching you carefully on this issue. Work with us or we will work to send you home."
Don't talk about how there's no difference mechanically between modern sport rifles and guns made 100 years ago, no need to talk about magazine capacity or databases or registrations. Instead the message should be short and to the point, "Gun bans have always proven to fail. We do not want you to keep doing what we know will fail and punish millions of good people at the same time."

That's it. I saved my reps phones in my cell phone as Congress 1, 2, and 3 with their names. That makes them easy to find and easy to call. When you call, you'll just get an intern who listens and makes a note about how you feel. Be friendly and to the point.

What we need is a literal flood of calls so that they get the message that the American people will not stand for this.

Find your reps here and save their numbers in your phone. http://whoismyrepresentative.com/

(3) Sign the Petition and Be Apart of Gun Appreciation Day

The 2nd Amendment Foundation is looking for 50 Million signatures, plus get a grass-roots events going all over America on January 19th, 2013, set to coincide with the Obama inauguration.

Go and sign the petition, and then see and be apart of what's happening on Gun Appreciation Day. The idea is to take flags, the constitution, and signs and visit your local gun store or gun show on January 19th and help make a big showing.

The idea is to replace the media's constant negative news on guns and gun owners with some positive and overwhelming news, and the national news is already all over this. In fact, some anti-gun groups are trying to stop it, feeling that they should not only stop our 2nd Amendment rights, but also our 1st Amendment rights to free speech and right to assemble.

It is a grass roots event, where people can organize and help as they would like, with many areas like Utah, organizing a march at the State Capitol as well.

(4) Spread the Word

Spread the word by passing this around to all your friends and encourage them to all do the same thing. We really do have the numbers in our favor if we just speak up.

The majority of Conservatives believe in the 2nd Amendment, the majority of Independents believe in the 2nd Amendment, the majority of Moderates believe in the 2nd Amendment, many Democrats believe in the 2nd Amendment, which means that the majority of Americans still believe in the 2nd Amendment.

Spread the word and make your 3 calls, once a week, for the next 8 weeks, sign the petition, and be apart of Gun Appreciation Day.

Why Biased Media & Liberal Agendas Need Each Other, And What You Won’t Hear About Mass Shootings

Yesterday was a sad day. An evil man set on committing mass murder, disregarded morality, disregarded laws, made plans, took preparations, and killed the most helpless and innocent people in our society – children. Religious people and those on the right have no problem calling this evil and know that evil does and will always exist despite laws and government intervention.

However, the immediate and knee jerk reaction from the biased media, Hollywood, and leftists politicians is a cry for more government laws and bans – and anyone who disagrees is “stupid.” (news link)

But is it stupid to ask what new law will stop someone who is evil and disregards laws? Isn’t it actually stupid to instead believe the leftist-utopian idea that a world where no one is allowed to defend themselves, magically makes everyone safe from evil?

It’s always sad when evil presents itself in the world, however I find it almost as bad to sit and wait to capitalize on such a tragedy and use emotions to push political agendas. The anti-gun groups are notorious for writing up gun-bans, and then waiting for horrible tragedies to begin pushing them.

In the words of Barack Obama’s previous Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanual, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that, it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” (quote link)

It is morally reprehensible to wait to use tragic events as launching pads for bad agendas that would never pass when emotions were set aside and facts were allowed into the discussion.

Even in President Obama’s moving speech after the shooting yesterday, he couldn’t help but in the same breath announce that he was going to push for the gun bans he’s always wanted, implying that these kinds of tragedies happen “all the time” and he can solve them with his anti-gun bans, and no one better let “politics” get in the way of him. (speech link)

NEWS is the Exception, Not the Norm

The real truth is that these things don’t happen all the time. (news link) News is only news because it is extreme and rare and the odd exception. News isn’t about the common place. News is never about the 100+ million gun owners that use guns for good, many ever single day for self-defense, or that there are more gun owners than doctors, more gun owners than golfers, more gun owners than both combined, or that your children are more likely to be killed by their doctor, by lighting, or in a car wreck, than in a school shooting.

The normal news outlets will never tell you that the divorce rate of 50% is a gross exaggeration by double, that marriage has been on the rise for the last 30 years, that teen pregnancy is down, drug use is down, crime is down, gun ownership is skyrocketing, and more guns of any kind in society do not relate to more crime, but in fact the opposite is true.

Why? Because this kind of information goes against the very nature of news. "If it bleeds, it leads," is the common mantra of news outlets, which shows that they have a biased towards bad news and tragedies. No one even doubts that news outlets are biased; and we even shrug when we see it on TV shows and Hollywood movies.

Hollywood constantly marginalizes gun owners as weird, un-educated, and various characters routinely ask the question, “Why do you need a gun?” They imply that in today's age, why is there a need to defend oneself when we have the government to protect us?

No one in media focuses on the numerous good uses of guns every day to protect themselves (some examples here) because it’s not news to them and goes against their mistaken belief that society is sick. However they do focus on crimes used with guns where laws or rules keep the victims from being able to defend themselves, and the tragedy is therefore made much worse by the perpetrator.

The media’s motto is its cause for bias: "If it Bleeds, it Leads."

This feeds the false ideas that guns are to blame, gun manufactures and models are important details in a news story, that our society is sick, and that crime is always up, and government needs to do something.

The belief that society is getting more sick is what the news business is all about, and it’s good news for them as well as leftists that want to push agendas. That is the crux of the problem and that is why emotion rather than facts will keep both the media and bigger-government agendas biased.

They are like the two sides of the yin and yang circle that constantly chase and feed each other. The biased media needs bad news to survive and always has the same knee-jerk reaction to every horrible story, “Where was the government protection? Why wasn’t the government there to save us?”

Those with a leftist agenda on the other hand crave a bigger government and need the drum beat of bad news in order to move agendas forward. They wait for the right tragedies to say, “This new, bloated government program, this new spending program, this reduction in liberties, this new regulation, this new oversight, or this new ‘sensible’ ban – this will save us.” ...until the next event where they admit they didn't go far enough, create enough regulation, reduce enough liberties, or ban enough guns.

Do Tragedies Really Require Government Solutions?

Why must a tragedy require us to "do something?" We already have laws in place and someone broke them on purpose. So why do people say, "we need some laws to stop things like this from happening." The fact is that we can't legislate away evil.

It’s depressing to hear of this tragedy yesterday, knowing that it will be compounded with an immediate outcry from those with an agenda to grow government, and have it swoop in and protect us. But in the end they'll continue to be simple solutions to complex problems that do nothing to address the fact that some people are just evil.

Nevertheless, some gun bans sound fine to uninformed people, especially when the Brady Anti-Gun Campaign has for years used the phrases “sensible” and “common sense” before using the word “ban” or “regulation” saying, “that some common sense gun regulations couldn’t hurt.”

The Seductiveness Of Anti-Gun Groups

So my question to those people is what new ban would make them happy? What ban would really stop crime? What ban would stop mass-murders from happing? Mass murders are dropping all the time despite a growing population and more guns in society?

We already have 20,000 gun laws in America, what’s that one gun law that we’re missing that would stop a murderer from breaking the law of committing murder?

The Brady Anti-Gun Campaign claims that their gun restrictions have stopped millions of felons from getting guns, but they want even more restrictions. But if they are right, where are the millions of felons that have been stopped? Where is the huge jail that’s full of these millions of felons stopped and arrested by the Brady Campaign’s Anti-Gun laws? The truth is they haven’t stopped millions of felons and the few that have been stopped could fit in your living room.

What they really want is for no one to be able to have any gun of any kind. And by vilifying some guns based on cosmetic reasons only, they win bit by bit. They get people to agree that yes, some guns should be on the left column and some on the right.

They won’t tell you why, but instead demonize certain guns as being for “Assault” or for the “Military,” despite the fact that you could really say that about every gun. There’s no difference in the guns they want to ban from guns made 100 years ago.

If they win this one it opens the door to any and all guns being labeled for "assault." It's the exact carbon-copy plan used to ban guns in Australia and Europe.

Government is the replacement for religion.

Those that push for gun bans tend to be people who's highest form of religion is government. They believe that government can and will fix every problem in society – if government could just be bigger. They believe that by putting up “Gun-Free-Zone” signs, that evil people will see the signs and go elsewhere. They imagine a gun-free country where we hold hands and sing Kumbaya because in their view, inanimate objects like guns are the cause of violence. They yearn for and want to create a violence-free world free of guns, where everyone is helpless and unable to defend themselves.

So where is their utopian society that they can hold up as a shining light to the world, a place where restrictive gun laws has created a place free of all evil and horrible violence?

Where's the Anti-Gun Utopia? Mexico? China?

Where in the world is their example that they want to emulate? On our very same continent, Mexico has the exact restrictive laws that they want and who believes that individuals there are somehow safer from evil?

China has horribly restrictive laws, putting people to death for even coming into possession of a gun, yet criminals there still have guns. And yesterday, the same day as our US school attack, there was a mass stabbing in a Beijing school where 28 children of the small age of four years old were stabbed. Why didn’t the Chinese anti-gun laws and anti-murder laws save these children from someone who is evil and doesn’t obey laws? (news link)

Why Won't the Media Blame the Media?

The media is quick to blame the Freedom to Bear Arms, yet why won’t they blame the Freedom of the Press or the Freedom of Free Speech for this tragedy? If anything it should be obvious that evil people seeking attention are the ones committing horrendous crimes of mass murder, and the media’s constant pouring over the life of the perpetrator, sympathizing with them, asking questions about why society let them down and who was really to blame, gives them the attention they seek, and therefore feeds the problem.

And yes, this applies to perpetrators who kill themselves afterwards, because others who are out there like them, watch the news and relate to the perpetrators. They see the attention given to the perps, the constant talk about how they were really a victim of society and how society let them down, and this media drivel goes on for weeks on every channel, talk show and newspaper. The perp gets notoriety and similar people watch that and desperately want the same attention poured over them. They feel like victims too and want their own attention and sympathy by doing the same thing.

So why doesn’t the media report on this? Because they believe that those types of sick people are rare compared to the rest of their audience. In other words, the rights of free speech and free press are mostly used for good, and some bad things will just happen. But they refuse to accept that the same argument in terms of the one constitutional and civil right that they adamantly disagree with – guns.

Don't fall for the liberal "Do-Something Disease."

Don't let the media's constant narrative cause you to believe that every bad thing requires us to "do something." Don't believe that it's the government's job to constantly be there to save us. Don't let the TV be your view of the outside world. Don't let the media's negative view of society, crime, family, religion, and guns cause you to believe the country is in irreversible decline and that only more government intervention can save us.

Remember that "news" is what's different, and is not the norm. Remember that the news and liberal agendas are fed by bad news and not by facts. Have a no-shrug policy when it comes to news agencies and liberal politicians making wild claims about guns in order to push an agenda. Never let their mis-information pass by writing in, posting on their stories, and link to better facts.

Pray for our country, and do what you can to spread conservative, religious and family values. Do what you can to lighten the oppressive requirements that keep others from being able to defend themselves, and help others understand the truth about guns and the decrease of crime.

If your are a gun owner, join the NRA no matter what. When they call you on occasion, give some money if you can, but be a member no matter what. The number of members has a lot of weight on congress, especially if membership is going up.

And just as you wear a seatbelt every day and not just on the days that you’ll get in a wreck, admit that evil exists in this world and look at how you can be prepared to defend yourself just in case. Do not fall for the myth that the government should and will always be there to protect you.

Truth Dispels Myths

And finally, beef up your knowledge on real gun facts because truth dispels myths and lies. Let me recommend a book by an economist who started on the left, wanting to ban guns. As he gathered and juried studies, he had to remain unbiased for the numbers to have any power and influence, and he proved time and time again that guns were actually good for society.

Being a man of integrity, he became a gun advocate and wrote a number of books showing all of his numbers and stats – none of which will ever appear in the news or quoted by liberal politicians.

Prepare yourself and read John Lott’s book, More Guns, Less Crime.

And save $10 when you join the NRA with this link.

Why YOU and YOUR VOTE Matters This Time, No Matter Where You Live

On paper, the election is looking very close and much like a tie in most battleground states.

We all understand the importance of voting if you live in a battleground state, but what if you live in a mostly liberal or conservative state? And what if you live in a western state and hear on the radio that the election has been called, even though you haven’t had a chance to vote yet?

This election unlike any other, requires a huge and vast amount of popular votes for Romney in ALL states – no matter where you live.

If you’re in Texas and know that your state is going to Romney we still need your vote. If you live in California and feel that Obama will win your state and therefore your vote doesn’t matter, your wrong -- we need your vote. And if the news calls the election before western states are done, it still matters that you and everyone you know votes for Romney.

Why? Because there are a few projected scenarios that cause concern, and having a huge popular vote win for Romney is key, regardless of Electoral Votes.
  1. It’s possible that Romney can win enough Electoral votes, but because of heavily populated states like New York and California, Obama could win the popular vote. The Constitution specifies that the Electoral votes are what matter, but Obama is likely to sue and challenge the Constitution saying that “America clearly wants him.” More Romney votes from all states will help against this happening.
  2. Obama could win more Electoral votes and Romney get more popular votes. Again, Romney would humbly concede and not challenge the Constitution as Obama surely would, but more Romney votes from all states will help him gain unseen Electoral votes.
  3. Romney wins by a landslide made possible by all of the extra people voting no matter where they live.
  4. Romney wins with both Electoral and popular votes, in which case having more popular votes helps helps make the win even more decisive. This will help those on the left to move on and not want to challenge the election.
  5. There is a perfect Electoral vote tie which Mark wrote about in an earlier post (linked here). This can be avoided with more popular votes for Romney.
  6. Nobody is predicting a scenario in which Obama wins by a landslide, which is encouraging. So this scenario is another big reason for everyone in every area of the country to vote for Romney.
It is important that you spread the word to everyone you can who can and will vote for Romney. In this election particularly, numbers really will matter, no matter where you live.

Until next time, America.

What if the Economy Were a Garden? How Would You Help it Grow?

It’s a myth that we have been in the “Biggest Recession Since the Great Depression,” however, we have been in the “Worst Recovery Since the Great Depression,” and have supposedly been in recovery for years now. But does it feel like a recovery to you?

Imagine if our economy were a garden, with plants of all sizes, big and small representing people rich to poor. These are people and business that work in the private sector who create wealth, or our garden’s fruit. The entire bounty from the garden is our GDP, and taxes are a portion of that bounty which are used to fund the government.

Right now our economy has shrunk, which is like having a smaller garden. Plus we have a lot of dead spots and plants that are not producing, that’s our unemployment.

The question is, how do you grow the garden and help it produce more fruit?

Obama and people on the left want to stunt the growth of the bigger plants on one side of the garden in the name of fairness to the smaller plants. They keep telling us that this will, against all logic, produce more total fruit.

Romney on the other hand wants to nourish every plant in the entire garden, and enlarge the size as well. He also wants to reduce the demands on every plant so that the entire garden is healthier. A bigger and healthier garden produces more fruit.

Interestingly, after World War I, Democrats and Republicans and even the king of liberal economics John Maynard Keynes, all agreed that if tax rates were too high, it forced rich people to put their money into tax shelters, instead of investing in businesses that employ people. This was not at all politically divisive. Everyone agreed.

In fact, they all understood that when tax rates were reduced, money was taken out of tax shelters and invested in businesses that hire workers. This money does not trickle down, but goes directly to the workers in hopes that the business will succeed. If and only when the business succeeded, the money would Trickle Up to the investors.

It’s a myth that any economist or politician ever endorsed the idea of “trickle-down-economics” because it doesn’t exist. The phrase was started as a left-wing attack by FDR towards his opponents.

Ever since, tax rates have became a political issue and a way of dividing Americans. Democrats with the exception of JFK have since pushed for higher tax rates and Republicans for lower, with Republicans being accused of only wanting to help the rich.

After FDR, liberals began to believe that recoveries come from the government going deeply into debt and spending money it didn’t have, while raising taxes on the rich. But truthfully, if we taxed the rich at 100%, it wouldn’t begin to solve the problem of the current administration’s need to spend money it doesn’t have and go more and more into debt. Plus higher debt and higher taxes put more strain on a smaller and stagnant garden.

Remember that government does not create wealth and it cannot create any jobs. All it can do is take wealth from people who create it (the private sector), and give it to people who don’t (the public sector). And though we need a certain level of the public sector, most people agree that the system can’t be sustained when the US Government is already gobbling up over 40% of our nation’s GDP and growing.

Growing the government doesn’t create jobs and doesn’t create wealth it only puts more and more strain on the entire garden.

Something has to change and Mitt Romney is the only vote that will remove Obama and his strangling policies. A vote for anyone else is a vote for Obama. Staying home is a vote for Obama. And unless you vote for Romney, you’re voting for bigger government, more debt on us all, and a slower, stagnant “recovery.”

Obama's Worst Economic Mistake

This hasn’t been what you would call a gentle election. Neither candidate has flinched from hitting the other where it hurts the most. Where President Obama is most vulnerable is his track record on the economy, which leads me to the question: why doesn’t Romney talk about the worst thing Barack Obama has done to keep our economy sluggish and the recovery slow? No, it’s not the federal government’s credit downgrade, it’s not trillion-dollar deficits; it’s not even Obamacare. Obama’s biggest blunder has been creating the same thing that, eighty years ago, transformed a stock-market slump and would-be correction into the Great Depression itself: uncertainty.

Hardly a word to frighten children or old ladies. In a knock-down race like this one, it sounds like a very mild accusation for a candidate to focus on—almost like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Maybe that’s why we hear so little about it. Its effects, however, are as sure as the wind-driven tide that last week rolled into New York and New Jersey, burying everything under a deep layer of cold and slowly rising water. Uncertainty carries an influence that stifles the self-correcting nature of the economy and quells recovery before it can start.

To understand why, put yourself in the place of a job creator. You might be the head of a huge company deciding whether (or where) to expand, or you might be a one-person operation contemplating your first hire. You’re about to make decisions that will affect others’ lives for years to come—where they’ll live, how satisfied they’ll be, whether their kids have insurance, etc. You want to know that you won’t have to turn around and fire them. The main question you’ll be trying to answer is “are these people going to make me more money than it costs me to employ them?” If you can’t answer that question to your satisfaction, you won’t create the jobs, or you’ll do it in a more certain environment—perhaps another country.

The same principle works in investment. When people send their money into the market, they don’t expect the government to give them guarantees, they just want to know the rules will be fair and that no one’s fiddling with the value of the money itself. If you suspect that the field is slanted against you, you’re going to sit on your money or seek greener pastures. You’d be a fool to do otherwise. Perhaps Jesus said it best: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” Without dependable measures of what might happen, nothing can be built.

No one disputes Obama inherited an economy in crisis, and everyone, if they think about it, has to admit that it’s not government that will get us out. Government employment and salaries have risen frightfully during this recession, but it can’t employ everyone, and government jobs don't create wealth. It can force people to invest (by spending tax money on businesses), but it can’t force investors to enter the market. Employment and investment are the engines that drive the economy, and government can exert only very limited control to speed up either one. Far more often, it slows them down.

So we agree uncertainty is bad, and the economy was in crisis. How did Obama make it worse?

First, his economic message showed no understanding of the real cause of the crisis. In an economy first brought to its knees by a housing crisis, then knocked out by criminal banking mismanagement, he announced his three top priorities for his first term: dealing with health care, education, and energy. Really?

Health care reform wouldn’t have been a bad idea for a secondary focus. It represents roughly 15% of the economy and is the cause of a disproportionate number of personal bankruptcies. As a minor part of an overall plan, fixing health care could truly have helped. Obama’s “solution,” however, wasn’t what any of the experts recommended. He did nothing to take health insurance out of the workplace, which would have protected workers’ coverage from the whims of their bosses. There was no initiative to remove barriers to competition across state lines which would let market forces lower prices (Obamacare creates 50 in-state exchanges), and he didn’t breathe a word about what could have been the real game-changer—tort reform. Instead, he engineered a program represented by a 2,000-page bill which has since expanded to sixty thousand pages of new regulations, which, instead of lowering the economic burden of health care, vastly expands it. Hospitals have no idea whether they’ll be able to obey the provisions of Obamacare, even if they want to, because there’s just too much to understand. Doctors are leaving the industry in droves, driven away by the prospect of being forced to do business Obama’s way. Health care: uncertainty number one.

Obama’s energy policy is even worse. Prevented from enacting industry-killing cap-and-trade legislation by Congress, he instead authorized his EPA to bring about similar regulations by its will alone. There has been no coal power plant built since Obama took office—he didn’t make it illegal for power companies to build them, he just said (proudly) that doing so “will bankrupt them.” In the world of oil, Obama opposed the construction of the Keystone pipeline, which would have created 10,000 jobs and increased domestic supply. Election pressures forced him to partially change his tune, but who knows how long his “evolving” stance will last? He imposed a moratorium on drilling permits, then consistently lied about when it would end. He bragged about keeping his “foot on the throat” of BP as punishment for their oil spill (I looked in vain for the “foot on the throat” section in Article II). In natural gas, He has opposed new production, favoring the repeatedly discredited narrative that fracking leads to contaminated water supply. In every case, the uncertainty faced by energy companies has increased to the point where electricity and natural gas prices have sharply increased, and gasoline prices have more than doubled in four years. There is one sector of the energy industry that is far more secure than four years ago: green energy companies with high levels of donation to Obama’s campaigns. Solyndra, Tesla, Fisker, A123—the list goes on and on—collectively representing billions of dollars of grants and loan guarantees. Unfortunately for the President, these companies lacked the common courtesy to wait until their benefactor was out of office before looting the till and going belly up. Obama said, under his plan, that energy prices would “necessarily skyrocket.” He has been as good as his word. Energy: uncertainty number two.

The final boondoggle of Obama’s first term plan was education. In spite of overwhelming evidence showing that dollars spent per child has had little correlation with performance, Obama fought to raise bloated federal spending even more, expanding the size and scope of the Department of Education. This new money largely goes to teachers’ unions, which people are increasingly coming to recognize as the real problem. By feeding this beast, Obama is guaranteeing himself the support of millions of deluded Americans, while denying them the choices they deserve and that their children so desperately need. Education: uncertainty number three.

So, Obama’s first term priorities were poorly chosen and poorly handled, but this alone wouldn’t have prolonged the recession. Education, health care, and energy weren’t the most urgent economic issues, and their economic effects, while real, are felt in the long term. Even if well handled, they wouldn’t have been the pathway to a quick recovery. What did Obama do about the breakdowns at the root of the crisis—housing and finance? Not much. He did pass the Dodd-Frank bill, which has been a mixed bag at best. It’s not that everything in it is destructive, but it does more to reward big banks than to protect consumers. For proof of this, just look at the list of Wall Street investment banks endorsing (and even contributing to) the legislation. As for housing, Obama’s solution is to reinflate the bubble. That’s right: after complaining that banking interests, in bed with government, destroyed our economy, Obama has doubled down on more of the same. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke is buying mortgage-backed securities with printed money. Home loan rates are even lower now than they were in the record-breaking troughs of the last decade. The difference is, this time, everyone recognizes the danger of too much government intervention, and home prices have failed to recover. Housing bubble reinflation: uncertainty number four.

Speaking of the Fed, it’s worth noting that we are now in our third round of what has been euphemistically dubbed “quantitative easing,” a monicker which helps the Obama-friendly media avoid uttering the hurtful phrase “printing money.” The money is loaned directly to the Treasury at a faster and faster rate. This is all in service of the stated goal of the Fed—to keep rates around zero percent for the foreseeable future. Sure, low rates can help arrest the freefall of housing prices (they can also be great if we want record deficits). But, when you’re picking investments, are you tempted by rates of less than half of 1%? Where does all this printed money go? Where it always goes—into the pockets of those with the best lobbyists, who were able to help draft the 2009 stimulus bill or other pork projects. When will all of this inflation catch up with us? Impossible to say. Currency manipulation: uncertainty number five.

Obama, and the Democratic Congress over which he has presided, have never once passed a budget, certainly a government’s first financial responsibility. The budgets the White House has proposed are so unrealistic, no one—not even a single Democrat—votes for them. Without a budget, no one can attack his economic priorities, because he literally has none. At the same time, no one who deals with government can reliably plan for the future. No federal budget: uncertainty number six.

The final insult of Obama has been on the institution that has historically been the greatest safeguard against uncertainty: the rule of law. Obama has flouted laws on several occasions, showing that they could be ignored when it suited him, and always in service of his donors. He brags about “saving” the auto companies, but what did he do except rewrite bankruptcy law on the fly? In a normal bankruptcy (such as that advocated by Mitt Romney) bondholders would have been first in line for satisfaction, and other creditors, like unions, would be forced to renegotiate certain liabilities. Instead, Obama substituted workers’ pensions as the first priority (as long as they were part of the Democrat-supporting United Auto Workers union). This sounds charitable on the surface. However, as Romney said at the time, a bankruptcy would have allowed the car companies to move forward without the business-shattering burden of generations of unrealistic concessions to the unions. Instead, it was the bondholders that took a bath, forced to accept a distasteful deal by the President himself. Now, GM and Chrysler have to work much harder to borrow money—who would trust them?—and when they finally do succumb to the liabilities that they no longer have the chance to shed, what will then become of the union pensions he broke the law to save? Obama can rest easy—when the auto-bailout piper finally has to be paid, it won’t be his problem anymore.

Also against the law: the “settlement fund” obtained by holding BP’s feet to the fire after their oil spill. Rather than let the normal legal processes take their course, he personally oversaw the transfer of 20 billion dollars into the supervision of his administration, to avoid troubling a judge or jury to determine damages or awards. This isn’t the act of someone who sees himself as the President of America. It’s the act of a king, dispensing justice and favors with equal alacrity, according to his personal wisdom and unquestioned power. The same thing happened with his own signature law: the Obama administration has granted hundreds of Obamacare waivers to business—a tacit admission that the law’s onerous provisions are killing jobs, but also that knowing the right people in Washington is a principle higher than law. There are many other examples, but these should suffice to show the vanity and hubris of this administration. Undermining the rule of law: uncertainty number seven.

Mitt Romney has a simple plan to fix the economy: simplify the tax code, removing deductions and lowering rates, so that people pay the same amount while doing less guesswork and complex math. Repeal Obamacare, end energy subsidies and simplify regulations, replace Ben Bernanke as soon as possible, and turn educational priorities away from teachers’ unions and towards children. Enact reasonable and timely budgets. Above all, renew the profound and necessary respect that our chief law enforcement official has for the rule of law.

Obama says Romney’s ideas will create greater deficits, but Obama’s figures are carefully crafted to ignore both economic and human reality. President Romney will cut the uncertainty caused by overreaching government. If Romney wins on Nov. 7th, the economy will breathe a collective sigh of relief, which, after his inauguration, will lead to rapidly increasing growth. Of course it will—the American economy has always rewarded certainty with prosperity. This will result in our government collecting more revenue even as it charges lower tax rates, an outcome well supported by history, mathematics, and common sense.

We’ve borne the costs of uncertainty long enough. It’s the most dispensable government policy there is. Let’s bring back an environment where the engines of our economy, employment and investment, can reliably “count the cost,” and get America back to work.
